2006 — Present

The Somali Relief and Development Society (SORDES) was established in June 2006 in Bardere, Somalia, by a group of Somali intellectuals who were deeply concerned by the prolonged effects of civil conflict, famine, and institutional collapse.

From the beginning, SORDES was formed as a non-political and not-for-profit organization, grounded in community engagement and local ownership. Its early efforts focused on alleviating immediate human suffering while laying the foundation for longer-term recovery and development.

The organization worked closely with affected communities to address urgent needs in health, nutrition, education, agriculture, and environmental protection, while also promoting awareness around child protection and emergency preparedness.

As operations expanded, SORDES gained recognition as a trusted grassroots organization in the Gedo Region. Through collaboration with local communities, diaspora networks, and international partners, the organization strengthened its capacity to deliver services effectively and responsibly.

To reinforce its organizational capacity, SORDES participated in the SOCSIS6P and EPARA programs implemented by Oxfam Novib (Oxfam Netherlands), strengthening governance, financial management, and emergency response systems.

Today, SORDES continues to support vulnerable communities through emergency response, rehabilitation, and long-term development, guided by dignity, responsibility, and service.
